Double Award Science

SPECIFIC AIMS OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Double Award Science department aims to

  • develop your knowledge and understanding of the material, physical and living worlds
  • develop your understanding of the effects of science on society
  • develop your understanding of the importance of scale in science
  • develop and apply your knowledge and understanding of the nature of science and of the scientific process
  • develop your understanding of the relationships between hypotheses, evidence, theories and explanations
  • develop your awareness of risk and the ability to assess potential risk and potential benefits
  • develop and apply your observational, practical, modelling, enquiry and problem-solving skills and understanding in laboratory, field and other learning environments
  • develop your ability to evaluate claims based on science through critical analysis of the methodology, evidence and conclusions both qualitatively and quantitatively
  • develop your skills in communication, mathematics and the use of technology in scientific contexts

Students gain two GCSEs for completing Double Award Science. The specification is unitised, with some units available in November, February and Summer, so it’s possible to take part of the assessment before the end of the course.

The specification has seven units:

Year 11

Biology Unit B1:

1 hour external written examination, 11% weighting, examining Cells, Living Processes and Biodiversity

Chemistry Unit C1:

1 hour external written examination, 11% weighting, examining Structures, Trends, Chemical Reactions, Quantitative Chemistry and Analysis

Physics Unit P1:

1 hour external written examination, 11% weighting, examining Motion, Force, Moments, Energy, Density, Kinetic Theory, Radioactivity, Nuclear Fission and Fusion

Year 12

Biology Unit B2:

1 hour 15 minutes external written examination, 14% weighting, examining Body Systems, Genetics, Microorganisms and Health

Chemistry Unit C2:

1 hour 15 minutes External written examination, 14% weighting, examining Further Chemical Reactions, Rates and Equilibrium, Calculations and Organic Chemistry

Physics Unit P2:

1 hour 15 minutes external written examination, 14% weighting, examining Waves, Light, Electricity, Magnetism, Electromagnetism and Space Physics

Unit 7: Practical Skills.

Booklet A - 3 x 1 hour externally marked practical examinations (1 Biology, 1 Chemistry, 1 Physics), 7.5% total weighting, examining 3 pre-release practicals

Booklet B - 3 x 30 minute externally marked written examinations (1 Biology, 1 Chemistry, 1 Physics), 17.5% total weighting, examining all course content set in a practical context
