SPECIFIC AIMS OF THE DEPARTMENT
To develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding of the specific science disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics
To promote inquisitive learning through the exploration of science that is relevant and practical
To promote and instill confidence in the use of transferrable skills such as numeracy, literacy and digital skills
To provide a solid foundation for further study of the specific science disciplines at KS4

OVERVIEW OF KEY STAGE 3 CURRICULUM
Students in years 8, 9 and 10 follow a general science course. This is delivered by one teacher for 5 periods each week.
Students study the following topics:
Year 8 – introduction to science, apparatus and safety, variables and graphs, cells, digestion, forces, the particle model, atoms and elements, energy stores, reproduction, acids and alkalis, pure and impure substances, plants and photosynthesis, energy resources
Year 9 – breathing and circulation, respiration, heat transfer, the reactivity series, moments, microbes, chemical reactions, waves and light
Year 10 – ecology, oxidation and reduction, energy and motion, rates of reaction, space, genetics, electricity and magnetism, the periodic table and bonding, the excretory system
