Jimi Hendrix, Dave Grohl, Slash and Carlos Santana are all household names, famous for their expertise in guitar playing, song writing and performing.  You can now add James McAleenan’s name to that list.  James has been selected for the finals of the Forestside 2021 Young Guitarist Competition which takes place on Sunday 7th of November 2021.  Contestants were asked to arrange and perform a cover version of a song of their choice.  James decided to submit a medley of songs by the band The Police, famously fronted by showman Sting.  The Police had several major hits in the late 70s and 80s, blending punk rock, reggae and pop.  James’ medley comprised some of their most famous songs including, ‘Message In A Bottle’, ‘Every Breath You Take’ and ‘De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da’.  The covers were performed without vocals, James opting to let his guitar playing skills do the talking.  The judges were very impressed with his entry and now James can look forward to the Final Night in Forestside Shopping Centre.  In the final James must perform his original entry again, as well as a second contrasting cover version.  James is now diligently preparing his second cover but is keeping tight-lipped about what it might be.  With influences such as Foo Fighters, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Dire Straits and The Beatles, the options are endless and no doubt it will be an exciting and interesting arrangement.  The school wishes James the best of luck for the big night and no matter the outcome he is already a ‘Guitar Hero’ to everyone in Aquinas!
