A number of students represented Aquinas in the Co Down Athletic Championship last week. Both the Senior and the Junior competitions took place at the Mary Peters’ Track on two glorious, sunny days.

Year 8 and 9 long distance runners had to qualify from heats first before attending the Co Down Championship. Congratulations to Kate O’Hare, Senan O’Rourke and Declan Arkins who all qualified for the Districts in the 800m.

Well done to all Junior competitors who represented Aquinas at the Districts in the following events 1500m, 800m, 75m Hurdles, 100m and the Long Jump.

Years 11, 12 and 13 raced well at the Senior Districts. James Gracey and Conor Doherty, despite the heat ran well in both the 800m and 1500m. Conor Doherty saved the best to his last race. He came 3rd in the 1500m, no easy feat and has qualified for the Ulster Championships.

Malachy Moreland gained a PB, jumping 1m 59 in the High Jump.

James O’Rourke performed well in both the 100m and 200m, making it to the Final in both events. In the 100m James ran a time of 11.84. He came 3rd in the Final and now goes on to represent Aquinas in the Ulster Championship. James narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 200m.

In the 800m Senior Boys race Peter Gracey, on the back of competing in the London Mini Marathon, was in great form. He won the 800m comfortably in a time of 2.06.95. Peter will now compete in the Ulsters.

Congratulations to Conor Doherty, James O’Rourke and Peter Gracey! Good luck in the Ulster Athletic Championship on Saturday 20th May at the Antrim Forum.
