Section A
1 Learn these definitions: The Causes and Consequences of the Partition of Ireland
Act of Union: In 1800 this act/law was passed. It abolished the parliament in Dublin and stated that all of Ireland would be ruled from the Westminster parliament in London.
Democracy: System whereby the people freely elect a government/ representatives on a regular basis.
Discrimination: Unjust /unfavourable treatment based on prejudice, especially regarding race and religion.
Gerrymandering: The practice of drawing electoral boundaries in a way that benfits one particular group at the expense of another. The best known example of this was the way electoral boundaries were drawn in Derry City.
Home Rule: The idea that Ireland should have its own parliament in Dublin, with the right to make laws about internal/ home affairs. Westminster would continue to control major issues.
Independence: Free from control by another country.
Nationalist: A person who wants more independence for Ireland. After 1920 Irish nationalists also wanted the reunification of Ireland. They are mainly Catholics.
Partition: The artificial division of a country. The Government of Ireland Act of 1920 divided Ireland into 2 parts. One of these was the six county state of Northern Ireland.
Proportional Representation: A system of voting where political parties get a number of seats in proportion to the number of votes they receive. It is better for minority groups than for first past the post. It was abolished in Northern Ireland in 1922 for local council elections.
Republican: A person who wants total independence for Ireland. After 1920 they also wanted the reunification of Ireland. They believe that the use of force is justifiable.
Self-Government: The Government of a country by its own people.
Unionist: A person who wants the political union between GB and NI to continue. Unionists do not want the reunification of Ireland. They are mainly Protestants.
