Ciaran Shearer dominated proceedings at Ormeau Golf Club on Thursday, winning the Aquinas Junior Golf Championship with an impressive 21 points. Ciaran also won the closest to the pin, longest drive and ‘beat the teacher’ competition. With the rain largely staying away, conditions were perfect for scoring and this was reflected in impressive efforts from Daniel Connor and JJ Gracey who secured second and third place respectively. Ruairi McMahon, Ben Smith and Frank McWilliams all narrowly missed out on a prize on count-back.

The Junior Championship brings an end to another eventful season for the golfers of Aquinas. Despite failing to qualify in the Darren Clarke School Golf League, the 2014/15 season saw the emergence of a number of promising players. Olivia McClurg is developing into a consistently excellent player, while Frank McWilliams match-play record this year was hugely impressive. With a summer of golf ahead I would expect to see handicaps tumble, something which can only bode well for the future of golf in Aquinas.

The Aquinas Golf Society would once again like to thank Ormeau Golf Club for the use of their facilities and for the very warm welcome we received. Hopefully we will return next June when Ciaran will still be eligible to defend his crown.
