The Y9 basketball team lost out 34-27 in the Ulster final against St Malachy’s yesterday.  Having defeated reigning champions OLSPCK in the semi finals, hopes were high for another Ulster title this year

The Antrim Road school started much stronger and raced into an early 7-4 lead as defense dominated each team’s strategy in the first quarter.  However, some great play by Northern Ireland U14 star Daniel Leggett brought Aquinas back into the game just before half time.

In the second half St Malachy’s three big men dominated the offensive boards that allowed the home team to race out to an eight point lead.  Howvever, Dara Curran, Christian Onella and Daniel Leggett led an Aquinas fight back and with three minutes to go cut the deficit to one basket.  Missed opportunities and poor decision making by the visitors allowed St Malachy’s to extend their winning margin and take the title undefeated with six wins from six.

For Aquinas, they will rue missed free throws and lay-ups.  However, the good form shown by Dara Curran, Niall McFarland, Matthew Rainbird and Christian Onella auger well for the Vince Halloran tournament in a couple of weeks time.
