During the summer, two Year 13 students Laura Erne and Adam Stuart were awarded bursaries by the Nuffield Foundation. This scheme enables students to work alongside professional Scientists, Technologists, Engineers and mathematicians. Laura gained a four week placement at RLC Engineering in Crumlin where she audited the tool stock and developed a new system of storage and stock control which was commended by the managers for its efficiency and potential cost savings. Adam worked at AES Kilroot Power Station where he worked with Engineers on a project to improve the filtering mechanisms in the Feed Water Treatment at the site.

The culmination of the placement was the Nuffield Foundation Celebration event at the Whitla Hall at Queen’s University of Belfast in September, at which Adam and Laura presented their project reports and were awarded CREST Gold Awards for their successful completion of the project.
