SECTION ONE: THE NORMAN CONQUEST

 

  1. Label and explain the key parts of a Motte and Bailey Castle.
  2. Draw and label a diagram of the Feudal System.
  3. Read the sources on Dermot MacMurrough carefully. Explain the difference between a Primary and Secondary source and why some sources are more reliable than others.

 

 

SECTION TWO: THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE AND CHURCH

 

  1. Explain the role of the blacksmith, the miller and the carpenter in a medieval village.
  2. Explain the terms self-sufficient and tithebarn.
  3. Complete a table on Crop Rotation.
  4. Explain the need for Doom Paintings and the importance of the Priest in a medieval village.

 

 

SECTION THREE: THE NORMANS IN IRELAND

 

  1. Read the sources carefully.

  1. Missing words and phrases e.g. Part of Ireland most fully under English control before plantations/Treaty that ended Nine Years War
  2. Map of Ulster. Label 9 counties and learn which county was planted by the London Companies.
  3. Be able to write 3 Results of Ulster Plantation. You could use Legacy part of Plantation of Ulster website for this.

 

 

SECTION TWO: KING AND PARLIAMENT

  1. Know what is meant by the Divine Right of Kings
  2. Learn a definition of tyrant
  3. Think of 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of the following types of sources to a historian:

eye-witness accounts/pictures/ official documents

  1. Read all you can about the type of man that Oliver Cromwell was in the blue “Investigating History” book and in the “Race to Rule” book.

Type of soldier/leader/ was he a fair or unfair ruler/what did he do in Ireland/ did all English people like him/ was he any better than or different than a King? You will be asked to write a longer type of answer to this using your own knowledge and sources on the test. When you are reading about him read the sources also. This will help you prepare for reading the various sources on the test.
