Basketball Update
The U14 and U15 Aquinas basketball teams have had mixed fortunes as they come to the final stages of their Ulsterleague campaigns before the play-offs after Easter.
The U14s are undefeated (3 & 0) with victories over St Columb’s Derry, St Joseph’s Derry and Our Lady’s & St Patrick’s College Knock. Eoin Nagle & Ollie McGowan have been outstanding in all games to date. Daniel Leggett (Year 8) has also made the transition into this team to produce some excellent point guard play especially in the away game to St Joseph’sDerry.
The U14s play St Malachy’s and St Pat’s Academy Dungannon in the next two weeks and both games will be much sterner tests for Aquinas.
The U15s are in a 2 & 2 situation. A poor performance at home to St Columb’s Derry (41-34 loss), defeat at St Malachy’s was followed by a great win against St Joseph’s Derry and a thrilling overtime win in Ballymena. The team is made up of 16 players but has yet to gel on the court as the coaches attempt to balance size, speed and outside shooting. Christy Carlin has been outstanding in all games with his rebounding at both ends of the court. The U15s have their final league outing against St Pat’s Academy Dungannon in a must win situation for Aquinas.
