Having recently become NI champions in the F1 in schools challenge (Ulster Museum, February ’12) Team Blaze progressed to the F1 in schools UK Final in Birmingham NEC on 16th & 17th March 2012. They were placed 4th in the UK – just short of a podium prize but very happy with their achievement on their first ever time in this prestigious competition.

The competition involved the team designing a F1 car body using computer aided drawing (CAD) and making it using computer aided manufacture (CAM).

The teams’ main sponsor was Thales Belfast . They provided engineering support throughout the process and provided very generous monetary support throughout the trip . Engineers met with the team every month from October 2011 – March 2012 to guide them through the design process using CAD, analysis of the fluid dynamics (CFD) and general manufacturing support. The car wheels and bearing were then designed and manufactured by EA Blthye a local engineering company and its professional finish was sprayed painted by Issac Agnew, SM Designs & Custom Graphix. The team uniform was provided Tailored Image and Monaghan Motors. Mount Charles Ltd provided very generous raffle prizes and we received cash donations by many other local companies.

The end result was a professional ‘mini’ F1 car which raced down a 20m track in 0.72s (approx 70mph). All the Team Blaze members and their teachers had a very enjoyable experience and we look forward to more success in future years.
