Former Aquinas linguist is top of the class at Queen’s

Christina McCloskey received the Reid-Harwood Scholarship based on the results of the Entrance Scholarship competition in Modern Languages during her first semester studying French and Spanish at Queen’s.

At the end of her first year she was awarded the Queen’s Foundation Scholarship for achieving the highest mark in Spanish and Portuguese Studies.

Next year she will decide whether she will study Translation and Interpreting at La Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, or work for Santander in Latin America, after having completed a summer placement in a Belfast branch as part of the Iberian Language Scholarship programme run by Santander Universities.

We wish her continued success in her studies!

Ruta Quetzal

Congratulations to Amaia Moore who came 2nd in the UK in the Ruta Quetzal 2012.

At the suggestion of His Majesty the King of Spain, Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo in 1979 created the program with the aim of forging bonds between young people aged 16 and 17 in all Spanish-speaking countries, as well as Brazil and Portugal.Ruta Quetzal BBVA is an “initiatory,” “enlightened” and “scientific” program in which culture and adventure come together. Thanks to this program, in the past 22 years nearly 8,000 young people from Europe, the Americas and countries such as Morocco, Equatorial Guinea, the Philippines and China have had the opportunity to discover the human, geographic and historical dimensions of other cultures. Cultures such as those of the Mediterranean or pre-Colombian civilizations, very distant from each other in geographic terms and in their approach to life, but which, at the same time, are merged in a fruitful mix which even today decisively shapes our world.

But the Ruta Quetzal BBVA is above all a formative experience in which participants, in addition to gaining knowledge, develop a spirit of international cooperation, with the aim of creating a new and more genuine set of values going beyond wealth and poverty.

After a rigorous selection process, expedition members are chosen from the best students in each country. Amaia went to the Spanish Embassy in London where she completed a variety of challenging tasks to test her linguistically, academically, and also in terms of her communication skills. Her prize is a trip for two to Castilla y León in Spain.

Juvenes Translatores

Aquinas students took part in the Juvenes Translatores competition on 24th November. This is organised by the European Commission and its aim is to promote multilingualism and provide an introduction to translation. Pupils from the 27 EU-countries undertook the challenge. 3637 pupils took part with 148 language combinations. The Aquinas translation team was made up of Callum Ball, Maeve Colton, Shane Doherty, Danielle Haughey, Arun Murtagh and Ross Trueman.

Aquinas welcomes Queen’s Spanish lecturer

Dr Sarah Bowskill from the Spanish and Portuguese Dept, Queen’s University Belfast, came to Aquinas to deliver an enlightening lecture on the Mexican Revolution and the role of women. She also looked at the theme of Magic Realism in the A2 novel, Como Agua Para Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. Aquinas pupils were joined by the pupils and staff from the Spanish Departments of Carrick Grammar, Grosvenor Grammar, Rainey Endowed, St. Malachy’s College, St Mary’s Magherafelt, Sullivan Upper, Holywood and Victoria College.
